“Don’t worry about being the next me. Be the first you.” - Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
Fighting With My Family is a comedy-drama based on the real life story of former female WWE wrestler Paige. The film is written and directed by Stephen Merchant, and stars Florence Pugh, Nick Frost, Lena Headey, Jack Lowden, Vince Vaughn, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The story follows the Knights, an English family consisting of all wrestlers. When 18 year old Saraya “Paige” Knight (Pugh) and her brother Zak “Zodiac” (Lowden) get offered a chance to make it big in the WWE, only Paige gets accepted to the next level, creating conflict between she and Zak. Enduring grueling trials during her training course, Paige strives to become the next reigning Divas champion.
I went into this movie not quite knowing what to expect. What I got was an inspirational, uplifting, heartwarming, and surprisingly funny film about following your dreams, doing the impossible, and what it means to be a family. I dug this movie for many reasons, one of which being the casting choices and acting. I truly cannot see anybody else playing the parts of anyone in the Knight family, and Vince Vaughn and The Rock are great as well. The script is written very well. There is some really good dialogue in the film, and the storyline is inspiring, and makes you want to pump your fists in the air and cheer.
The wrestling scenes are great, and realistic. All of the jokes in the film work really well, and had me laughing many times. I liked how the film perfectly balances the serious aspects with the comedy. The movie has you laughing at all the right moments, and on the other side of it, it knows just when to pull at your heartstrings too. My main fault with this movie is that it felt a little clichéd at times, and the music felt a little bit overused here and there. There were times when the music worked perfectly, but there were other times when the film should have let the silence work for itself.
In the end, Fighting With My Family is a surprisingly good wrestling film that will have you laughing, and feeling inspired the whole way through. I really enjoyed this film, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a good underdog story.
