“If you build it, he will come.” - Shoeless Joe Jackson
I’ll start by saying that this is one of my top three favorite sports movies. The story is really well thought out and creative, and I enjoyed the character development very much. The characters are all very likeable, even despite the fact that a lot of them are flawed. The film explores some very interesting character dynamics including, but not limited to a farmer who feels regret surrounding his damaged relationship with his now deceased father, a baseball player who was permanently suspended, and is dealing with being seen by many as a criminal, a writer who struggles with being a has-been, a wife and mother who is dealing with financial difficulties on account of her passionate husband, and a doctor who only got to play one inning in the major leagues.
Another thing I loved about this film is just how magical and inspiring it is. There is just something really amazing about the idea of there being a place where all your dreams come true, and this movie captures that beautifully. The way this film deals with that really warmed my heart and inspired me deeply. The acting in this movie is really stellar all around, and there are also some expertly delivered monologues that stick with me to this day. The camerawork is very well done, and there are some truly beautiful shots present in the movie.
My favorite thing about Field Of Dreams is that while it does romanticize the game of baseball, you don’t have to be a baseball fan to enjoy and be affected by this film. I am by no means a sports fan, but I still adore this movie, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a timeless classic that will inspire you and fill you with joy.
